After serving as a Judge for 21 years, Gary Maxey retired on December 31, 2014. The law firm of Ward Lee & Coats is pleased to announce that Gary has joined the firm as Of Counsel effective immediately.
“It has been an honor practicing in front of Judge Maxey for the past 11 years,” said senior partner Clint Ward. “He was always a fair and very knowledgeable jurist that I have tried criminal and family law matters in front of many, many, times. I could not think of a better man and legal mind to join our firm than Gary Maxey,” he added.
Gary was appointed as Craig County’s Associate District Judge by then-Governor Brad Henry in 2003. He served in that capacity until his retirement on December 31, 2014. Gary handled thousands of divorces, guardianships, criminal cases, and civil cases over the years. Before coming to Craig County, Gary served as a Special District Judge and as a First Assistant District Attorney in Garfield County. He also served as District 40’s State Representative from 1988 to 1992.
“I am very excited to be back in private practice after nearly 30 years in public service,” said Maxey. “Over the years I have watched many lawyers in my courtroom and I was always impressed with this firm’s lawyers. They really care about their clients and they always fight for their clients. So I am very excited to be a part of the Ward Lee & Coats team.”
Gary will represent citizens of northeast Oklahoma helping them with their legal needs. Additionally he will be a mediator and has been hired by Northwestern Oklahoma State University as its Director of Early Settlement for Northwestern Oklahoma. Gary will also be consulting with the firm’s attorneys and clients on matters of criminal, civil, and family law.
